Ruyton Girls’ School is a leading self-reliant school with classes from Kindergarten to Year 12. Our School has an outstanding reputation for excellence in the education of girls. This reputation is founded on strong academic results and high levels of participation in co curricular activities with a definite focus on personalized learning and the attainment of personal best for each student. There is a potent sense of belonging which manifests itself in a total school approach, with students, staff and parents occupied together as portion of one school community. We recognize the importance of providing the best possible learning environment for our students and staff. Ruyton has made a formal commitment to becoming a more sustainable school with the appointment of a Coordinator of Sustainability and involvement with the Resource Wise Schools programmed. In the Junior School the Green Team encourages us to save the environment through a number of programmed. Ruyton is a member of the Schools Environment Tracking System (SETS) which records data about all the School’s resource usage. The TravelSmart programmed was introduced at Ruyton in 2007 and girls are encouraged to receive public transport to School and to share lifts where possible. Ruyton Girls’ School is committed to the safety and well being of children and young people and has a zero perseverance for kid abuse. Ruyton has developed a Kid Safety programmed which sets out the policies, procedures and labor store systems that have been designed to maintain a child safe environment and to embed an organizational culture of child safety within the School community. The Board regularly reviews the School’s child safety policies and practices, and welcomes input from members of the community via the Principal. Our School offers a dynamic learning community with strengths such as our vision for girls’ education, the size of our community, a commitment to academic excellence and individual development, the quality and diversity of our curricular and co curricular activities, active community involvement and a potent sense of community. Ruyton maintains a mighty and loyal teaching staff whose commitment to excellence is reflected in the outstanding results our students attain at VCR. We aim to make the device invisible’ and learning the focus, with the opportunity to personalize the learning for each student.

Established in 1878 Ruyton has a potent sense of tradition and we are arrogant to uphold our motto, recce et fideliter’ which means Upright and faithful’. Today this can be seen as loyal and correct to self and to others, as our students prevail in their academic results, as members of the community, as leaders and as global citizens. Even at this stage sport was an integral piece of what was on offer for the girls, and there were opportunities for jumping, vaulting, Siamese races, potato races and flat races. Miss Bromby was a formidable figure in female education in Victoria at this time (she was the daughter of Dr Bromby, beginning headmaster of Melbourne Grammar School) and was the beginning woman to pass the matriculation with credit. Here was one of Ruyton’s first confident, resourceful and resilient individuals. Miss Bromby’s skills, coupled with a tall social standing and potent links with the church, ensured the triumph of the school. Amongst the annual enrollments in 1893 was one Hilda Young Daniel, who moved from being a boarder to a teacher and then to headmistress, when she took over from Miss Emile Lascelles in 1913. The School Archivist maintains records which document the tradition, history and unique identity of the School.
